He added that she was “unique among people the earth has seen or is not expected to ever experience anew,” and that “her presence and joy brightened any space she walked into.”

Sudden Loss and Lasting Impressions

She had been out of the public eye for some months, and a confidant revealed that although no specific condition had been disclosed, her health had declined swiftly, with several of her trusted allies not knowing that she was suffering.

Her death nonetheless was a shock even to her dearest friends.

“Not long ago, the world was a place that contained Diane Keaton,” notes the director. “Now it’s a world that is without her. Hence, it’s a drearier world. Nevertheless, there are her movies. And her wonderful chuckle still echoes in my head.”

Steadfast Allegiance Through Allegations

The actress continued to be a staunch supporter of Allen after the resurfacing of a 1992 abuse allegation leveled at him by Dylan Farrow amid a parental rights case.

This claim was investigated at length and then dismissed by investigative agencies, and no charges were filed.

“Woody Allen is my confidant and I still trust him,” she said of the allegation when it gained fresh attention as part of the social campaign. “It might be of interest to take a look at the news feature from 1992 and see what you think.”

Reflecting in the previous year, she noted: “He was so remarkable. It always was really special to be with him. He was wonderful. He was everything, and he continues to be [so] to me. He provided me with endless opportunities. He really did. Allen created a free atmosphere. That helped me enormously.”

His tribute features recollections of their joint experiences beyond the set, including a memorable Thanksgiving engaging in cards with her family, and says of their relationship: “We had a few great intimate times together and finally we both moved on, and the reason for our separation only higher powers and psychology might be able to figure out.”

A great deal of what I’ve accomplished in my life I credit, for sure, to her. Viewing life through her eyes. She really is remarkable. This is a person who is superb in all she does.”
