US Government Shutdown Establishes New Milestone as Longest in American Records

The US federal closure has now reached its 36th day, establishing it as the longest duration of federal shutdown in American records.

This shutdown, which began on October 1st, was caused by lawmakers' failure to agree on a new funding deal. This has resulted in federal employees without paychecks and countless citizens without essential services.

Democrats and Republicans have remained gridlocked for multiple weeks without signs of compromise - although some glimmers of hope are beginning to show.

"I just think, from my intuition of how these situations work, I think we're approaching an solution here," the Senate's top Republican commented.

The former government shutdown record occurred during Donald Trump's first term and lasted 35 days before it ended in the year 2019.

Increasing Impacts on Citizens

In the weeks following the shutdown's start, the consequences on everyday Americans have worsened.

Numerous federal workers have not received their salaries, and there are growing fears about impacts to air travel nationwide as flight controllers and airport employees work without pay.

"Should we reach a week from today, you will see mass chaos," the Transportation Secretary warned. "You will see mass flight delays. There will be numerous cancellations, and you may see shut down sections of the national airspace, because we cannot properly operate because we lack sufficient air traffic control staff."

Food Assistance Crisis

The effects have particularly affected by low-income Americans who depend on federal assistance programs.

Approximately 12.5% of people in the US are reliant upon nutrition benefits from the SNAP program, but only a portion of these benefits is being distributed this month due to lapsed funding.

The previous administration had - at first - announced no food assistance money would be dispersed in November but a US court mandated that contingency funds be used to provide citizens partial benefits.

"Food assistance will be given only when the Radical Left Democrats open up federal operations, something they can readily accomplish, and not prior to that," the former president wrote on social media.

Legislative Deadlock

Members of the US Senate have considered the identical short-term funding bill to reopen the government more than a dozen times with no luck. Attempts were made once more recently to no avail.

That proposal passed the lower chamber in September.

Democrats have so far declined to back the short-term measure on federal operations except if Republicans agreed to extend medical coverage assistance for low-income Americans. The governing party have resisted, accusing their counterparts of holding the government hostage over separate political objectives.

"If we don't start seeing any advancement or some evidence of that by at least the week's midpoint, it's hard to see completing any agreement by the end of the week," the senior Republican informed journalists. "In my view that represents the goal here, is to try and reach an agreement that we could send to the lower chamber that would restart the government."

In recent days, there have been indications that centrist opposition members and Republicans are keen to discuss and reach an agreement ahead of the holiday on 27 November.
