They're Doing in America What They Performed with Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of multiple weeks, the US president started showing all observers his designs for a lavish reception room twice the size of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to erect it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of casualties from his cuts to USAID amounts to 600,000 and growing, and recently research forecast his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no former commander would have conceived – unilaterally destroying major areas of the White House to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the world' into 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As disorienting as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and because the fastest-growing cadre of Americans could have minimal awareness about him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or nones. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably definitely not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; instead, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to escape covert authorities. The child matures in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his teaching concerns compassion for other people, especially for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Jesus' answer to hostility is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to educate the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever someone steals your coat you ought to provide the person your additional clothing too.

The apparent and straightforward reality that Christ from scripture advocates for a form of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Finest Within Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to see the steadfast resistance regarding Trump arise during the previous year. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the initiative that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to turn out in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, through connection to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is most protected by relationship to that which renders it unique and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it suggest acting as if the worst regarding America and religious tradition did not happen; it represents both meekness and conviction, a mixture that serious national faithful should embrace.
