The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a crucial Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.

"He will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before entering the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to represent either country at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official senior international match.

He has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club chase future success.

Following his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
