The Hit Drama Announced for 7th Series on BBC
The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.
An upcoming six-part series written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."
The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only came this week.
New Challenges for The Team
Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat corruption within the police force.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."
New Character and Intricate Plot
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.
However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had so many fans track the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."
Show History
The drama launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.
The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.
The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
