A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country battling entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the 40-year-old entertainer was approached by a trio of assailants, one of whom shot at him before fleeing on foot.

The reason of the incident has not been established and no one has been arrested have taken place, as per the official statement.

Law enforcement said that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a premises close to the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the site managing the installation of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, as per local media.

"It is alleged the victim was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," authorities stated.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a individual with dreadlocks and dressed in what looked like a protective services outfit firing shots on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ tried to run away after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries on the opposite side of the road.

It was further revealed that Stock had an weapon on his person and nothing was taken during the attack.
