Meteorologists are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Forecasts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, following last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Open but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. The mercury are expected to be chilly, meaning additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Weather Alerts for Friday

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Commuting is anticipated to be impacted.
• Travelers are advised to leave additional time for trips on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on trains and buses.

Temperatures Expected to Plummet Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Alerts Activated

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this indicated the weather was likely to trigger notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
