Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
