Food Benefits Expected to Expire for Over 40 Million During Prolonged US Government Shutdown
USDA officials declared recently that SNAP funds through a critical national welfare initiatives are not going out during the coming month amid the persistent government funding lapse.
Impasse Persists For Nearly Four Weeks
The federal closure had reached three and a half weeks when the announcement was made, which followed demands from hundreds of Congressional Democrats urging the USDA to access reserve accounts to cover November's food assistance.
“Ultimately, funds are depleted,” the department confirmed. “Now, assistance will not be provided” on 1 November.
Widespread Impact
Tens of millions of people depend on these food benefits, per federal data. In certain states, including one southwestern state, use of this assistance affects a significant portion of citizens.
A memo obtained by a major news agency showed that federal authorities would not access contingency funding for the upcoming payments.
Legislative Deadlock
Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree about the way to support and resume federal agencies.
A statement from the director at a budget research center suggested that the administration could have acted to prepare in advance to avoid interruption in payments.
“It could have, and should have taken steps earlier to get ready to use these funds,” the comments added. “Conversely, it may choose not to use them to secure political leverage” as Republicans seek to pressure Senate Democrats to support a spending bill to restart government operations.
States Prepare
State leaders from two affected states declared states of emergency this week to allocate funds for hunger relief expecting nutrition assistance payments stopping in November.
