Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
