EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
