Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his decision to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of public tension between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations
Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned Cuomo, calling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a new statement, Adams changed his position, announcing he now plans to appear with the former governor in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.
“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the communities of color that have been affected by gentrification on how important this race is,” the mayor remarked.
Adams continued, “They have watched their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them motivated.”
Election Landscape and Current Developments
The election battle has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has made headlines worldwide and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.
In a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa declared they would decline Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Months ago, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dropped in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.
At an unrelated press conference on the same day, the mayor answered journalists asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”
This development came a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a heated candidate debate.
