While Michel Illouz carefully navigated through the masses beneath the Mediterranean pines and palm trees at the graveyard in Ra'anana, a urban center located about 21 km north of Tel Aviv, he expressed gratitude to as many attendees as he could.

Previously he offered an invitation to the local community to stand with his relatives in grieving his 26-year-old son, Guy, whose physical form had been repatriated from Gaza on Monday.

Massive Turnout

Countless individuals heeded the invitation. They filled the roads, processed behind the coffin transport carrying his remains, and gathered at the burial site in such large quantities that the primary scheme to hold the service indoors had to be abandoned.

As an alternative, the ceremony was held outside, with the background of the sound of singing birds.

Significant Milestone

This marked the opening memorial service since the final score of prisoners were returned from Gaza, together with several deceased individuals. Additional 21 of the deceased hostages continue to be lost, but at the very minimum this family now had a specific place to grieve and remember their son, according to friends.

Sorrowful Account

Guy Illouz, a musician and audio engineer, had been struck from behind at the Nova concert event during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Before the tragedy unfolded, he had contacted his father from a concealed location to tell him he cared; to say goodbye. He was taken hostage, and based on those imprisoned alongside him, he eventually succumbed from his injuries due to inadequate care.

Loved One's Insight

A close acquaintance of the Illouz family, Michelle, aged 50, commented that it had been crucial to them that people attended today. The Illouz relatives, including Guy's two younger sisters and brother, had observed shiva, the week-long period of bereavement, after discovering of his demise in December of the year before. But now that Guy was ultimately back with them, they required "supportive individuals again."

"My spirit is uplifted that you joined us," stated Michel. "This means everything to us."

He addressed his son. "Beloved Guy," he expressed, using a term of endearment, "it's difficult for me to conceive the days ahead without you. They grabbed you from me – they killed you – they kidnapped me and stole my identity and destroyed my spirit and emotional core."

"There's a void within me since that senseless shooting by those vicious attackers when they caught you and commanded you to turn around, and then merely shot two gratuitous rounds into your posterior."

"So I found myself this morning, traveling to Abu Kabir forensic institute to verify your remains and say goodbye. They removed the white sheet, and the first thing I observed was that characteristic grin, that optimism, that peaceful presence and grace that so characterized you."

Family Strength

In the beginning phase of the service, Illouz had dedicated all his efforts on comforting his younger children. He tenderly caressed the strands of his daughters, embraced his boy, showed affection and gathered his emotions for them. But then his emotions surfaced.

"I'll miss so much exploring alongside you through this country, feeling you, listening to your compositions, sitting in the hills and igniting the flame to create the drink the way only you mastered – 'Father, do you see the coffee foam?
