California's Governor Confirms He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has indicated that he will determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections conclude.

"Yes, I would be lying otherwise," Newsom stated when asked about contemplating a White House bid post the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."

The governor's tenure as governor concludes in January 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he cautioned that any decision is still years away.

"Fate will determine that," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

The California governor has come to the forefront as a prominent critic of the current federal leadership, leveraging his social media accounts and pushing a ballot measure that would increase Democratic House seats in response to GOP gerrymandering. This action has invited attacks from critics.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend interview on a major news network. The secretary revealed a strategy to withhold federal funds from the state and threatened revoking the authority to grant trucking licenses.

"I'm about to pull a significant sum from California," he stated, after a recently reported tragic collision in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that resulted in three deaths and casualties.

The governor's team pointed out that the federal government had renewed the individual's authorization multiple times, which allowed him to obtain a CDL under national regulations.

Duffy had previously indicated he was holding back $40 million from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," his administration said in a previous statement countering the funding warnings. "For now, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: California commercial driver's license holders had a death rate much lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Polling Data and Political Future

A recently conducted poll revealed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that Newsom must consider running for president in the next election cycle. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has risen to an mean of a third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has fallen from an average of more than 40% to current figures.

In previous months, the governor commented while on a trip several swing states that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The thought that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, remarkable," he said. "Who the hell knows? I await who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the voters."
